Marie-Line Rochard '17 Performs at Carnegie Hall

On Saturday, February 13, pianist Marie-Line Rochard '17 performed her New York debut at Carnegie Hall. One of 35 students selected to perform at the ISM Honors Recital, Rochard played Franz Liszt's "Liebestraum No. 3" in A flat major.

An honors student at the International School of Music (ISM) in Bethesda, Rochard was selected to perform at the ISM Honors Recital after a rigorous audition process. The auditions evaluated not only the skill level of each student, but each student's passion for music and drive to improve. The purpose of the concert is to expose promising young musicians to the world of music and to provide each selected student with a foundation of significant musical accomplishment.

Having started piano lessons at the age of six, Rochard has been working towards this level of skill for the past decade. Rochard credits the support of her piano teacher, Sofia Vulfson, for helping her achieve such an honor.

"I personally was not sure whether I wanted to audition for this concert; musicians work endlessly, often their whole lives, to play at Carnegie. In the end, I realized that taking risks was going to be part of anything I want to do in life," stated Rochard.

In addition to her performance at Carnegie Hall, Rochard has played at the Strathmore in North Bethesda each year for the past four years.

Bravo to Marie-Line!

On Tuesday, March 8, the Middle School cast of "Hamlet" showcased their talents at the Folger Shakespeare Library's 2016 Secondary School Shakespeare Festival. The festival began on February 29 and runs through March 11 with more than 30 schools participating. Each day of the festival, four to five schools perform for 25 minutes each. After each performance, each school group receives critiques from festival judges, participates in group activities with the other schools, and wins awards in recognition of their work. Skye Worster '20, Brielle Herlein '21, and Josephine Stark '21 all received awards in recognition of their performances.

Originally performed in Holton's Diana Coulton Beebe Black Box Theater this past fall, it was a wonderful opportunity for our Middle School students to resurrect their parts and "wow" the many other schools in attendance! Congratulations, girls!

We are pleased to announce the results of the recent auditions for Maryland All State Ensembles organized by the Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA). The organization holds annual auditions for eight All State music groups: Senior Band, Senior Mixed Chorus, Senior Women's Chorus, Senior Jazz Band, Senior Orchestra, Junior Band, Junior Chorus and Junior Orchestra. A rigorous audition process selects about 920 students from the 6,000 to 7,000 students in secondary school music programs who audition for the groups. Holton's music teachers are active in MMEA and there is great support for the All State program. Each year, they encourage students to audition, help them prepare for the audition, and coach them after selection. The faculty agrees that preparing for the audition makes every student a stronger musician. Those who have the extraordinary opportunity to participate in All State continue to grow as musicians, and they come back to school ready to be leaders and mentors in their ensembles here at Holton.

Holton has had an impressive number of All State musicians over the years, and the list continues to grow. The following student musicians have been selected to represent Holton-Arms when their All State ensembles gather this winter for an intense weekend of rehearsals, with outstanding guest conductors, that culminate in fabulous final concerts.

Lea Berthiaume, '17 – alto – All State Senior Mixed Chorus

Brielle Herlein, '21 – alto – All State Junior Chorus

Michelle Jang, '19 – soprano 2 – All State Senior Mixed Chorus

Esther Kim, '21 - oboe – All State Junior Band

Ema Nakayama, '21 – alto – All State Junior Chorus (second consecutive year)

Brava to our All State Musicians, and brava to all the Holton musicians who prepared so diligently for the auditions last month!

American Shakespeare Center's Blackfriars Perform

On January 24, Upper School students enjoyed a live production of "Romeo and Juliet" by the American Shakespeare Center's Blackfriars. Each year, actors from the troupe stage a full Shakespeare play in Holton's Lewis Theater to the benefit of the Upper School student body.

Interdisciplinary opportunities outside of the classroom like this are one of the hallmarks of a Holton education. "Seeing Shakespeare performed is an invaluable experience for anyone . . . since the 9th grade has their end of year MELO (May Experiential Learning Opportunity) Romeo and Juliet experience, this will hopefully prove to be even more beneficial to them for when they get into that week of rehearsal and performances," explained Mark Robinson, Theater Manager and Technical Director at Holton-Arms. As in year's past, the Blackfriars' engaging style made the event fun and memorable for the Upper Schoolers.

When not on tour, the troupe's homebase is in Staunton, VA in the world's only existing recreation of the indoor playhouse that was used by Shakespeare's theater company, the King's Men, in London. Learn more here.

US Play - "The Crucible" - Feb. 24 & 25

The drama begins with Salem's minister Reverend Parris (Sam Hanson, Landon '18) at the bedside of his young daughter Betty Parris (Sarah Muhlbaum '20) who is afflicted by a strange illness. Witchcraft is suspected and Parris sends for local expert Reverend Hale (Shea Sion '17). Soon all the girls of the village are crying out that they've been bewitched and foremost among the accusers is 17-year-old Abigail Williams (Natalie Bock '18.) Rich landowners Ann and Thomas Putnam (Sophie Johnson '19 and Bobby Ramkissoon '17) encourage their daughter Ruth (Nina Mourao '18) to cry witchery on their neighbors so that they might gain even more land. Ruth joins her friends Mercy Lewis (Paige Magid '20), Susanna Walcott (Talia Szalay '20), and Mary Warren (Katie Babbit '17) in accusing witches.

The first to stand accused are those with the least power, an enslaved woman Tituba (Yasmin Alamdeen '17) and a beggar (Lauren Cooke '20), but soon court clerk Ezekiel Cheever (Lailah Fritz '18) has issued warrants for more than 39 citizens and Court Marshalls Willard and Herrick (Betsy Schugar '18 and Jumana Schmidt '20) have rounded them up.

Local farmer John Proctor (John McMahon '18) suspects that Abigail has fomented this hysteria in a twisted attempt to rekindle their relationship, a brief affair that he had while his wife Elizabeth Proctor (Cecilia Parker '17) was sick. His suspicions are confirmed when Elizabeth, too, is accused of witchcraft, along with her friends Martha Corey (Micaela Lamas '20) and Rebecca Nurse (Jordan Fues '17). Proctor vows to expose Abigail as a fraud and enlists the help of his serving-girl Mary Warren to convince the court of his wife's innocence. Giles Corey and Francis Nurse (Skye Worster '20 and Clara Ferrari '17) go with him to plead for their wives as well.

With so many accused Deputy Governor Danforth (Maryam Gilanshah '17) joins local Magistrate Hathorne (Olivia Herlein '18) on the bench. Their courtroom is the crucible of the play's title, and in it they seek to discover the truth of what troubles Salem, even if they must sentence scores of people to hang for invisible crimes.

Stage Manager Laila Syed '19 leads a team of 14 student technicians, with assistance from Rinnie Hewlett '17 and Izzy Koff '18. Kate Magill Robinson designed the costumes. Nick Arancibia serves as lighting designer and Mark Robinson designed the set and led his Production Technology students in its construction. Drama Director Elizabeth Zitelli directs this team of 38 student artists.

The online box office is now closed. Tickets are available for purchase at the door. A limited number of tickets remain available for opening night. However, several tickets are still available for the two Saturday performances.

Performances are:
Friday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m.

Members of the Orchesis dance ensemble participated in a two-day artist in residence experience with Monique Walker, from CityDance. Ms. Walker introduced the dancers to the Umfundalai African Dance technique, which is a Pan-African dance technique that draws from movement from different African and African Diasporan cultures. As shared from Dance and Drama Department Coordinator, "The girls learned about cultural traditions and acts of respect during the two days. The challenged themselves to try new things, sometimes outside their comfort zones, and they grew as artists." Additionally, some of the Orchesis members shared their thoughts on the two-day experience,

"I enjoyed how Ms. Walker dove right into the technique because we did not have a chance to be nervous about learning a new style."

"I liked learning traditional African terms as well as dance from a variety of African cultures."

Check out the video below of Orchesis dancing in the Umfundalai African dance style:
